Best of 2013 – Film & TV

This morning WordPress emailed me with my stats for the year. Turned out I had written 199 posts on 2013. Well we can’t have that! Here is number 200, a semi thought out media based favourites list. The usual disclaimer applies, these are my personal favourites of the year (that I can remember). There is a whole tonne that I haven’t seen – The Selfish Giant, Gravity, Breaking Bad etc etc. Sorry. Hangs head in shame. In no particular order:

Films magic_magicMagic Magic (Sebastian Silva) | Young, naive girl travels to South America and quickly unravels, possibly due to Micheal Cera’s creepy knitwear. Juno Temple is captivating even as an unstable, hysterical tourist.

Good VibrationsGood Vibrations (Lisa Barros D’Sa & Glenn Leyburn) | A feel-good film set against the backdrop of the Troubles? That’s punk for you.

BlackfishBlackfish (Gabriela Cowperthwaite) | I love a good, biased, cause documentary to get all het up about. Even better when it’s about my major hate – SeaWorld *boo hiss*  Free Tilly!

FilthFilth (Jon S. Baird) | This one is a film that grew on me the more I thought about it. James McAvoy is surprising perfect as the twisted Bruce Robertson.

frances_ha_4Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach) | Definitely my favourite of the year. In the same vein as Girls but Frances is a more relatable, likeable character. I love the scene where she spontaneously dances through the streets. Pitch perfect.

TV CatfishCatfish: The TV Show | I love Catfish! So addictive even though it is ridiculously set up. Spoiler alert – they’re aalll catfish!

Orange is the New BlackOrange is the New Black | Totally binge watched this on Netflix one weekend. The end was so shocking! Can’t wait til it comes back next year.

Trophy wifeTrophy Wife | I’ve just started watching this but I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s similar to Modern Family and Suburgatory, the other two sitcoms I’ve been loving this year so thought it was an appropriate choice for this list, it being new and all. I love Bert, he’s so funny.

GirlsGirls | Show me a 20-something woman who doesn’t love Girls and I’ll show you someone who hasn’t seen it. I joke, I realise it is quite a Marmite show but on this occasion I’m all for it. And yes, I bought the Patrick Wilson storyline, I’m all for any storyline that involves a naked Patrick Wilson.

Penguins Spy in the HuddlePenguins: Spy in the Huddle | EEEE! Penguins! Filmmaking technology! Baby penguins! No one does wildlife documentaries like the BBC. This one was beyond comparison. When Dolphins: Spy in the Pod starts on January 2nd I may spontaneously combust. Just a warning for you there.

What were your favourite films and TV shows of 2013? Tell me all the ones I missed.

Halloween Film – Netflix Picks

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE! How are you celebrating? How about a cosy night in with a film? I’m a huge horror movie film so here are my top picks on UK Netflix for tonight.

1. Sinister

2. Teeth

3. Carrie

4. Tucker and Dale vs Evil

5. Scream

Or the best horror based TV show ever:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

What will you be watching tonight?

Bazinga Punk!

Penny and Sheldon HamaFeels like I haven’t done anything crafty in ages! And that’s because I haven’t. This is an old project but I realised I have never posted it and wanted to share with you today.

Big Bang Theory HamaThe Big Bang Theory is one mine and the bf’s favourite shows so I made him this for Christmas. It is based on a pattern which I got from WeeLittleStitch on Craftsy, who have so many amazing designs. The pattern was for cross stitching but I went for Hama Beads because I’m lazy and it’s so much easier!

Friday Favourites – 26 Oct

Last Friday of October! It’s been an exciting month, I’m coming to the end of my Photo a Day Challenge and my Nail Art Challenge and I’m considering what I should take on for November. Here’s what has been floating my boat this week:

Olympus E-PM1

Not quite taking the plunge back into SLR photography so I’ve decided to get a kinda in between camera and I think this is the one. It’s a pretty reasonable price (around £250) which seems good to me as there are numerous lenses I have my eye on for it so I can splash out on them instead. Looking forward to sharing some pictures with you.

Visit www.dpreview.com if you’re looking to get a new digital camera and are after some reviews.

Cuckoo

Even though I see each episode roughly four times, thanks to BBC3′s mad scheduling, I am really enjoying this comedy. From the first adverts, I thought Cuckoo looked terrible, but I am happy to eat my words on this one. Starring Greg Davies and Andy Samberg, the general premise is that Ken (Davies) hates his daughter’s new hippie husband, Cuckoo (Samberg) who has moved into his home. OK so I’m rubbish at selling it, but trust me, it’s good, mostly down to the talents of Davies and Samberg.

If you are in the UK, you can watch it on BBC iPlayer here.

Friday I’m In Love!

Most appropriate t-shirt award goes to… A calendar design acting out The Cure’s Friday I’m in Love. Lovely!

SNOW!

Ok, so this is not really following the pattern of these posts, but I’m excited as we had the first snow of this winter today! That means it’s almost Christmas, right? admittedly, this is an old photo, the snow isn’t quite lying like this yet, but I’m hopeful for a white winter – I know it can be cold and miserable, but I love it. And how cute does Mr Murphy look in this picture?

Whoop whoop! Bring on November!

Friday Favourites

I thought I’d restart this blog by jumping on the blogging bandwagon with Friday Favourites, or how it should be known on here, Stuff by Other People. Hopefully it will give you an idea of what I like, my style and what you can expect from this blog. Here goes:

Esra Røise

I first came across this talented artist on Pinterest. Actually, an image pasted on Polyvore, pinned to Pinterest and repinned 100 times. I love her drawings, they are a style I strive to emulate; simple, effective and full of life. A Norwegian artist, her work can be seen in uber-cool places such as NYLON mag, exhibitions from London to Oslo and adorning Eleven Paris t-shirts in France. I picked this image because as well as being gorgeous, I love TV so it seemed appropriate!

The Nailasaurus’ Tetris Nails

Amazing! This is my favourite nail blog. The pictures are great, the designs creative and the execution immaculate. I also happen to love Tetris so when it came to choosing my favourite nail pic of the week, this was a no brainer.

Triple Chocolate Chunk Muffin

Should come with a health warning right? Nope! Apparently it’s 58 calories per muffin… that’s about the same as an apple… hmm. Not tried this recipe yet but it sounds pretty easy and the end product looks very chocolatey which is always good in my book.

Here is the link to the account where I found this: www.healthyisalwaysbetter.tumblr.com I don’t really use tumblr but accounts like this are good for inspiration/motivation. Click the title above the photo to go straight to the recipe.

DIY Missoni Trainers

Apparently the original Missoni for Target sneaks were going for $31, 000 on eBay. What?! Yup, so inspired DIY types came up with a fun, frugal yet fab solution. Now, I may be late to the Aztec trend but I’d love to do these, throwing in some different lines, squares and dots. I think I have white canvas shoes in the cupboard… to Hobbycraft! (Don’t judge me for going to Hobbycraft, my regular independent art and craft store got shut down a year ago and turned into a *shudder* tartan shop. Still not over it).

Visit www.refinery29.com for this and more general awesomeness.

That’s it! That was fun. See you next Friday!
