Shopping My Stash – Berry Eyeshadow Shades

Berry EyeshadowSo if you saw my wishlist post last week, you’ll know that I’ve been lusting after the  Maybelline Colour Tattoo Cream Eyeshadow in Metallic Pomegranate. But before I break the old spending ban, I thought I’d see if I already had any colours in my stash that might fill the gap.

17 Rose QuartzFirst up – 17 Solo Eyeshadow in ‘Rose Quartz’. Despite the name suggesting a pale pink colour, ‘Rose Quartz’ is a purpley toned metallic. Too pale to be a substitute for ‘Metallic Pomegranate’ but pretty all the same.

Sleek Storm Pallete Apologies for the messy palette but lets focus on the top right corner. This is the cranberry shade in Sleek’s ‘Storm’ palette (one of my all time faves). This is a dark, red shade that has enough brown tones in it to be very wearable.

Urban Decay Last CallPlease try to ignore the lushness that is ‘Smog’ there and focus your eyes on ‘Last Call’. This is the Urban Decay Book Of Shadows ‘New York’. It’s a truly beautiful palette – it even lights up! ‘Last Call’ is a cheeky plum shade that, like all UD shadows, is lovely, soft and easily blendable.

Fearne Cotton Made you lookLastly, Fearne Cotton’s make up line for Boots included this ‘Made you Look, Made you Stare’ palette that includes a bright cranberry red. Slightly less metallic than the other offerings, but a good shade.

Cranberry eyeshadow swatchesHere they are swatched on the hand. Top to bottom: 17; Sleek; Urban Decay; Fearne Cotton. The Fearne Cotton one is extremely powdery, hence the mess!

On to the winner! My top pick is the Sleek shadow. It is metallic, it’s definitely a pomegranate/cranberry shade, and it is a great quality shadow.

However, the eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that none of theses shadows are cream based so none can be described as ‘dupes’. Guess I do need the genuine article after all then.

  1. I think my favourite is the Urban Decay shade. I’m not sure how I’d wear any of those shades though. Maybe blending with a brown?

    • I’d wear them with either lots of black eyeliner and mascara, or like you suggest, blending with brown for a softer look. This post by Lily Peebles is great for showing how cranberry can be blended with brown for a wearable look: http://www.lilypebbles.co.uk/2013/10/cranberry-burst.html

The UD <3 NY palette is easily my favorite of all the palettes I purchased from them!
