Happy International Women’s Day everybody! In honour of the occasion I dedicate this week’s Friday Favourites to all the wonderful women of the world. In an age where ‘feminism’ is a dirty word and ‘slut-shaming’ is a thing, we should stop and take stock. Is feminism really over? Why is there such an abundance of girl-on-girl crime on the internet nowadays? In the words of Ms Norbury: “You all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it OK for guys to call you sluts and whores”. Let’s learn the lessons Mean Girls offered up and show some love.
Caitlin Moran With her bestselling book How to be a Woman, Caitlin Moran is the modern-day face of feminism. Funny, smart and important, I read her book and then thrust it upon anyone who came near me for months afterwards. If you haven’t read it, do so. Now!
Anne Hathaway What is with all the Hathaway-Hate at the moment? She is good in everything! Even that Alice in Wonderland mess! Plus she is the face of One Billion Rising, a movement fighting for women’s rights the world over, which is pretty cool.
Fabiola Gianotti How many female scientists can you name? Physicist Fabiola Gianotti led the team of 3000 people who discovered the Higgs Boson particle. With her contribution being recognised in the media, perhaps the achievements of other female scientists will be equally revered, opening the door to more women entering the field. We can hope.
Yep, women rock. Share some love, who are your female icons?
