Mani Monday – Velvet Goth

Models Own Velvet GothHi Folks! Today I have two new polishes to share with you from the Models Own Velvet Goth Collection. This is an autumn collection and features five colours, red (‘Sardonyx’), purple (‘Amethyst’), green (‘Absinthe’) blue (‘Valerian’) and a black (‘Obsidian’). The polishes are a matte glitter finish, not velvety like the name suggests but we’ll forgive that as the lid makes the bottle pretty special. These will look great sitting on your dressing table during the colder months.

On to the swatches! IMG_5474 IMG_5477As you can see these dry to a matte finish without being textured. My main problem with these is the application. It’s very difficult to apply evenly as they are so fast drying. This means that the polish starts to go thick and clumpy around the top of the bottle, on the brush and on your nails. The above pictures are of three coats, two would have done but the third was in order to attempt to achieve some sort of consistency.

I like the finish but I don’t love it. I’m still slightly in summer nails mode though so maybe it will grow on me. I decided to add a topcoat to see what difference a gloss finish would give. IMG_5478 IMG_5483I used Seche Vite as the topcoat. You can still see the unevenness of the polish so again I don’t love this, even though the blackened red is a pretty cool shade and the purple has great richness and depth.

Overall, I can’t see me getting much use out of these even though I do really like the idea and the colours. Unfortunately, it was just too much of a hassle to apply and the colours aren’t so unique that I can’t find alternatives (Revlon’s ‘Scandalous’/’Facets of Fuchsia’ immediately springs to mind for ‘Amethyst’).

Have you tried any of the Velvet Goth Collection? What are your thoughts?
