As a bit of a film geek (and a geek in general) many people are often surprised to hear that I have never seen any of the Star Wars films. Especially when I then go on to tell them that I studied sci-fi in Uni. But I am more about Star Trek (Captain Picard & Next Gen all the way), preferring a leisurely journey than a battle.
However, I decided that I should fill this gap in my repertoire. Having bought this rather lovely box set for David one birthday, we decided we should have a Star Wars day after he finished his exams. Fate was sealed when we discovered that his last exam was last week leaving the weekend of May the Fourth wide open. Star Wars Day it was.
We donned the appropriate attire, stocked up on sugar and settled down for an epic day. David had prepared goody bags which I thought was a very nice touch and included popcorn, crisps, sweeties, drinks, Nerf guns and Star Wars Lego. After a bit of debate we decided that we would watch them in story order – Episode 1 to 6.
I think this order was a good choice. The Phantom Menace was awful so I was glad to get it out of the way first. It has a pretty intense stigma around it and is accused of ruining the franchise. One thing I would say is that I think that it would appeal to 8-year old boys, who it is probably aimed at, not the aged 30-something existing fans (sorry!). Attack of the Clones didn’t fare much better, but I enjoyed Revenge of the Sith a bit more.
Murphy joined us for Episode 3. We were at the messing about stage, but as you can see, the cat at least was enthralled. He lost interest and wandered off by the start of A New Hope, but me and David were in it for the long haul. It was just about to get good! My favourite of the bunch was The Empire Strikes Back and I’m glad that we watched Episode 6, Return of the Jedi last, as I think watching the originals first, then the prequels would have been a massive anti-climax.
All and all, it was a good day. I liked having a themed day and watching all of them together. I’d definitely be up for doing another themed day in the future. Maybe Scream or something like that. Do you have any suggestions for me?
May the Force be with you.
